Myofunctional therapy is treatment consisting of neuromuscular re-patterning, coordination, and re-balancing of the oral and facial muscles. Treatment consists of facial and tongue exercises and behavior modification techniques to optimize functions such as breathing, chewing, swallowing, speaking, occlusion , temporomandibular joint movement, oral hygiene, stability of orthodontic treatment, sleep, facial aesthetics, posture, and optimal facial skeletal growth.
Myofunctional therapy is also an important component of several orofacial surgeries such as frenulectomies (ie. tongue-tie surgery) and jaw surgery (ie. mandibular advancements). An important component of myofunctional therapy is the restoration of proper oral rest posture and elimination of mouth breathing. Just as physical therapy establishes normal muscle function in the body, myofunctional therapy trains the muscles and soft tissues of the face, neck, and mouth to function optimally.
Individuals who undergo treatment regain enjoyment of eating, breathing, speaking, and even sleeping more soundly. If you or someone in your family are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above call us to schedule your first appointment.
